I helped myself to some coffee in the lavish kitchen; I may dine on lost souls regularly, but I enjoyed human comfort foods now and then, too.

I watched the tiny house keeper scurry around me, fussing everywhere I placed my mug or stood. I suspected she guarded the Cavenaugh’s house with such ferocity she’d put most supernatural guards to shame.

Rosie stood well under my chest, salt and pepper hair tied in a neat bun atop her head, and her black-and-white uniform pristine. She was the model house servant.

With no supernatural abilities of her own, Rosie used what nature had given her—her hands. The three-story mansion ready for visitors, and the kitchen spotless, with ready-to-eat food in the fridge. Yet she continued to hustle and bustle around me like an angry hummingbird.

“Oh, you’re up already,” Kinsley mumbled as she entered the kitchen. She was still angry following my abrupt statement—good, she should be angry. She helped herself to some coffee and stood far away from me.

“Yes, I heard your dragon lady,” — I pointed at Rosie, — “make a ruckus in the kitchen so I had to enquire who it was.” I grinned.

“She’s not a dragon lady,” Kinsley fumed, draping an arm around Rosie’s shoulder.

I raised my hands in mock surrender. “We need to go. Grab something to eat and come.”

“Why?”

“You’re spending the day with me until I get this sorted,” I said, pointing to my side.

Kinsley grumbled, stormed towards the fridge and grabbed a small yoghurt and an apple.

“I’ll see you and Mom later,” Kinsley said to Rosie. “Call me if anything happens.”

“Why are you going with this man?” Rosie asked, her suspicious fiery eyes stuck on me.

I grinned, needing to show Rosie my true self, but didn’t. I couldn’t risk Kinsley seeing that side of me yet.

“It’s fine, Rosie,” — Kinsley squeezed Rosie’s shoulder, — “he’s protecting me from Barry.”

“I don’t trust this one.” Rosie wiggled her finger in my direction. I tried to move out of the way, but that bony finger followed me.

“I’d love to stay and prove my worth, but we must go,” I added, pointing to my naked wrist for effect. I headed towards the door, grabbing Kinsley’s hand as I passed. “Bye Rosie, don’t wait up for us.”

Kinsley missed a step, but I caught her waist and held her up.

“Easy darling, there are easier ways to fall for me.”

“Ugh, get off me,” she moaned, pushing me away. “Where are we going, anyway? I thought we were staying here.”

“As much as I enjoy staying in your mansion, I have work to do. And you, my dear, need to come with me.”

Ever since I’d arrived last night and being close to Kinsley, the pain in my side had all but vanished, and I was thankful I didn’t get that kick like I did at Niki’s club. So wherever I went today, Kinsley had to tag along, and that meant coming with me when I swapped favors.

I held Kinsley’s hand tightly. Her smaller hand in mine felt way too comfortable for my liking, but I dared not let go.
